Urban Fedora: Sharing my shopping secrets

Finally I have returned!! I am so happy to be back in the groove of things once again. As I am typing this I am pool side after shooting some quick looks at home. Balancing a full time job and a blog isn’t the easiest task to do. No matter what my full time paying job will always come first, it is a steady income and I am trying to get the ball moving for my marketing career. My work environment is amazing and isn’t something I am easily distracted from… the only distractions is the million options for snacks we have in the kitchen. Other than that I am a busy bee from the moment I walk in to the moment I leave to commute home. Tired is an understatement especially when my weekends are filled with many events.

The holiday weekend I used to recharge my batteries… it continued into the week where I needed some time off. It wasn’t that I hated blogging, i just didn’t have the time or effort that I wanted and prefer to have when I do things for my blog. I always loved the entire creative process and that is something that will never change. I will continue to evolve with the changing processes which I am trying to get into place before the summer is over. I am hoping at least. It is a small goal but I am trying to stay focused on the positive and most important things here, which is the creativity. I will never post anything just to be “consistent.” My consistency is that I have a full time job and this is something I do as a hobby. A hobby which I love and adore… I truly hope one day something can blossom from this, but right now I am still at the beginning stages of it all. The interactions I have had so far have been nothing but wonder and awesome! I love interacting with other bloggers through social media or anyone who leaves a comment. If my funny comment or caption made them smile when they were having a crummy day then I am happy, or if it made them happy or laugh in general then that makes me happy. If it inspires someone to go out and buy the exact outfit or something similar then that makes me happy. Can you tell my goal here is to be happy? Haha!

I woke up feeling like it was time for me to jump back in. It was an itch I needed to scratch and I am sooooo fucking happy to be back! Oh my god! It felt like a century!!! This particular look I have been hoarding in my brain for some time. I share with you all over the winter how I turned this slip dress into a top. And I did it again. Converting my looks into different seasons is 1. Fun 2. making my get my bang for my buck. No doubt I was inspired by a few of the bloggers I followed but these were items I already had in my closet. No need for me to go out and buy anything new. Which is a point I want to make. If you see someone wearing something and you want to recreate the look always look in your closet first before spending the money on an entire new look. This could be something you wear just once, its not worth spending extra money if you don’t have to.

This is my creative process when trying to recreate a look that I see:

  1.  Where is the look from?
    • If this is another bloggers outfit, head over to their website to see if they linked the look.  9 out of 10 times they linked all of the items they are wearing, and sometimes looks for less or similar options if it is sold out.
    • Too lazy? Sign up for like to know it. Most bloggers are associated with this app. You can download it through your phone or sign up here. If you screen shot the look it will show up in the app with the outfit details
  2. Check your closet
    • Always look in your own closet and dresser to see if you already have this look or something similar..even if it is one or 2 pieces from your wardrobe that you already have.. not only is this saving you money but you are creating a look that you are inspired by
  3. Price decision
    • If there is a particular item that you cannot live without decide if it is worth the purchase:
      • Can you see yourself wearing it more than once?
      • Can you name 3-5 places/occasions where you would wear this?
      • Can you find this item for less on Amazon or a similar item somewhere else you frequently shop?
    • Out of my budget.. like waaayy out of my budget
      • OK so I cannot afford this right now or maybe even ever – what are my options?
        • Save up for that item, whether it be a pair of jeans, purse, sunglasses, dress, shoes
        • Check to see if you can find a similar option for something in your price range.. thjs goes into the “fast fashion” topic that was discussed at the Create & Cultivate conference that I attended in May. I am going to get super honest with you… From a designers POV, it sucks… you work you ass off to get your company off the ground and your items are marked at a certain price range because of the quality… from a middle class working girl POV, I can’t afford to spend $200+ on all of these items, especially if it is a trend.. this is going to go out of style in a year so why spend the extra money when I can get almost the same item from a different store that sells in my price range. I get it because I am living that life style now. Is there a way to balance this out? YES! I recommend in investing in designer items that you are going to get every day use out of. Bags, every day shoes, jackets, sunglasses, glasses, jeans. These are items that I am willing to spend a little extra money on… I am not saying spend a grand or more on that one bag or that one coat, be reasonable here and use your noggin and judgement on what you feel comfortable with

These are just some tips and tricks that I use when I am shopping. I even see my cousins who tend to buy the designer items use this rule of thumb when shopping. Why spend a ton of money on just one item when I can find more than one and spend the same amount of money? I hope these tips help you out the next time you are searching for an item or see something you like online. It isn’t about having the in trend items or wishing you were them on these lavish vacations when following these bloggers or social media influencers.. it is about finding inspiration and motivation to make your life better. If seeing a girl constantly travel makes you jealous, wipe off the green mug and book a vacation somewhere or find a place you really want to visit and start saving. Being the green eyed monster isn ‘t going to get you far in life, but using it as motivation to push yourself to do things and flipping a negative feeling into a positive one a better outlook on life in my opinion.

In Between Weather: Layers

Layers. Its key to almost every in between season. Layers are great to wear because if it gets warmer you can take the bulkier layers off and still be comfortable. Or if it gets a little colder you can add the layers on to stay a little warmer. I’ve been seeing so many bloggers layer looks especially with slip dresses and slip tops. Although I only have a slip dress, I didn’t want to waste money by purchasing another top that would just be in my closet for one specific look. Converting my slip dress into a slip top was easy.. I just tucked it into my jeans. The material is thin enough where it wouldn’t bulk up and look funny which made life so much easier. I recently got this simple top from Zara, of course I have it in black too. I am trying my best to stay clear of buying black clothing items since I have SO MANY already. This was a compromise since gray is in the same color family of my favorite color to wear.

I wanted to keep with the trends of the fishnets under the jeans look, it was some what strange to wear. Despite the fishnets being thin, it is still another layer… underneath your jeans. My jeans are ripped at the knee so its a cute little pop that you’d see when I’m walking or sitting down. Its a fun little surprise to my outfit that most might not see immediately. Wearing my trusty leather jacket draped over my shoulders has been my go to look for the past 2 seasons (I’m counting winter as almost over with that quick warm weather we got). This changes the entire look and I highly recommend trying it out… just not walking around on a cold winter day. It looks cute, but doesn’t feel so cute as your getting a blast of cold winter air in your face and chest.

Accessorizing this was rather easy and I wanted to keep things simple. My velvet choker added another fabric style to the mix and my Dynamite layered necklace. Of course I had to wear my Quay Australia Vivenne glasses. I love them dearly. Also because it was so windy out my eyes were tearing… it was so bad that my liquid liner was smudging terribly and my makeup was making its way onto my contact lenses! Not sure if this has ever happened to any one else before but it has happened to me way too often that I know what to do. And that was to cut my photoshoot short and fix my lenses haha!

Slip into this trend: weekend look

img_3162img_3167img_3199img_3200

See what I did there? Made a pun in the title. Get it?

Slip dresses have been a major trend this past fall.. I’ve always been the type of girl to always wear pants when it came to the colder months. The thought of exposing my legs to the cold weather and wind, its just a hard core no… until I saw this slip dress. There are so many ways to wear it and the best part is that you can layer this look.

Today I am wearing an outfit that was inspired by something I saw on Pintrest. Recently I got these over the knee suede boots, which are the knock off to my coveted Stuart Weitzman lowlanders. I found these beauties in DSW, what gravitated me towards them is that they were wide calf.. something that tends to be rare in stores. Although they are suede and the fabric has more give compared to leather,  the other suede over the knee boots that I had tried on were more fitted, even with a pair of jeans on. I didn’t want to cut of the circulation in my legs so I decided to go with the wider calf pair which I couldn’t walk away from.

This slip dress was a nice find from Urban Outfitters… for a long while I have been looking for a nice slip dress. A friend of mine had ordered one online and when it arrived it did not look the same on her as the model in the photo. So I knew this was something that I had to truly take my time in searching for. Unfortunately throughout all of the stores near me I could not find anything that was close to what I had in mind. I was getting to the point where I was going to buy a slip from the lingerie sections of the stores. It shouldn’t have been that difficult to find, a simple black slip dress with lace accents. And then. Shay Mitchell came the rescue, just as her character Emily has done many times in Pretty Little Liars.. she made my life SO. MUCH. EASIER…. and the end of the 2 month long search for a slip dress. She posted this in her winter look book and even shared where it was from. Perfect timing since it was right before Black Friday. It was $30 which isn’t a terrible price, especially because I had seen it on a person.. and she was moving around. I saw how it fit and how it moved. The detail in this slip dress also caught my eye.. the cut on the side of the dress added a bit more of a sexier feeling to the look, plus it had the lace detailing at the bottom of the dress that I had been looking for without breaking the bank. End of search.

img_3188

This slip dress trend doesn’t end there though.. there are so many different kinds of slip dresses you can purchase. Velvet, suede, satin, silk, lace, etc. What everyone has been doing is layering with these dresses. So if you feel more comfortable with a t-shirt underneath this dress then go for it. If you want to layer it with a sweater you can too.. layering for the winter months is definitely key for staying warm.. and fashionable. I do recommend being able to try on these slip dresses. Although I ordered mine online, I did see it on a person before I got it. This was a bit of a difference, at least to me.

Since I like to wear all black I added my go to Forever 21 cropped leather jacket and my all time favorite Ray Ban sunglasses. The choker I got from Dynamite earlier this season, it had been awhile since I had worn this and since I’ve been wearing more scarves lately its hard to show off a choker. This also help accent the gold in the hardware of my jacket and my bag. I don’t know how many times I’ve shown off this bag, but it really was worth the investment in getting.

Side note: I finally was able to use my fancy camera for these pictures! Still learning about how to work the camera but I hope these photos are better quality than my previous ones. HUGE THANKS to my friend Alison who took all of these pictures for me. She’s so much fun to shoot with, always knows how to keep a girl laughing!

Black Friday Online Haul

I hope after a nice 4 day weekend everyone is adjusting to the swing of things. A long holiday weekend filled with non-stop eating and socializing and shopping we all feel like we need a break from things. Can’t stop now though, not with the holidays right around the corner! Previously I have posted about how to get your black belt in shopping on a black Friday. I truly hope this helped some of you when it came to shopping. This year I decided to go on a different route when it came to shopping, staying at home in bed and all of my shopping was completed online. Last year I did venture to the stores after my holiday dinner, luckily I had Thanksgiving at my house so I didn’t have to worry about the long travels home and then to the stores. What I discovered is that most of the stores begin their “Black Friday Sales” on Thanksgiving, so there is no need to wake up at the crack of dawn or in the middle of the night to head to the stores. This worked out in my benefit because I was able to quickly get what I needed and leave before the insane crowd of people arrived to cash in on these sales.

This year after my family left, I jumped on my laptop to see if there was anything left in the wish lists that I had created the weekend prior. Unfortunately, half of the items I was lusting after were no longer in my size or completely sold out. My bank account rejoiced with this news… I on the other hand was disappointed & saddened but realized that there were no need for half of the clothing items I wanted.. I mean how often was I going to wear a royal blue suede jacket? Probably once. On the positive side there tends to always be a sale during the holidays so IF some of these items were to come back in stock (like this beautiful black suede and faux fur jacket from ASOS) then I may consider it a sign from the shopping gods to purchase it… but let’s talk about what I DID purchase.

The great thing about shopping online is that I had multiple tabs open after adding everything to the carts so I can compare what I was buying. Sometimes you don’t realize that you gravitate towards similar colors or styles. With Express I knew that I wanted to buy a ton of sweaters that I could wear to work and I desperately needed a couple pair of jeans to hold me over until I can buy a nicer pair or 2 or 3. We all go through a point in our lives where our body shape changes, for me personally it was from all of the “excessive partying” lifestyle. After a bit of a health wake up call I was forced to change my “partying lifestyle” ways to a healthier one. What hadn’t changed is that I am a shopping addict. So after purchasing MANY stretchy jeans, none of them fit me. That’s the unfortunate part of those types of jeans, they stretch out but never stretch back in… so I have to have a few pairs to hold me over until I can buy at least 2 nice pairs (at a discount of course 😉 )

Most of the sweaters I got I wanted to be able to wear for multiple occasions, who doesn’t want multiple looks out of one item? I know I do. My main goal was a balance of casual and dressy items. Since I also recently purchased an all white outfit, I decided this winter I wanted to wear some more lighter shades rather than my gothic Wednesday Addams go to look. Missguided was having a sale that was 50%! I pinned this gold off the shoulder top a few months ago and decided this had to be one of my holiday looks. Luckily it was in stock and in my size. The Dynamite off the shoulder look is some what similar but longer sleeved, a girl needs options! These looks I can wear all throughout the winter and show off the metallic trend for the winter. A win, win in my book.

Adding a little bit more color into my wardrobe is a challenge, I’ll admit. Since pink/blush tones are a trend for the fall/winter I wanted to slowly dip my toes into this trend. In my Quick post: Turkey Day outfits I suggested this sweater as an option for a holiday look, now I wouldn’t recommend anything that I wouldn’t wear myself. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it… stay tuned for how I feel about wearing pink rather than white or black. Missguided also had a cool graphic shirt that had part of LA & NY on it, I have a secret love for California… truly I do. Last spring I really didn’t feel like coming home while visiting there because who doesn’t love sunshine every single day?!

Now onto the classic slip dress. I’m pretty sure this isn’t something that you are suppose to wear out in public but I don’t really care. I’m not one to follow the “fashion rules.” If I like it, I’ll wear it….. and Shay Mitchell posted this in her winter look book (which you can watch all of its awesomness here). I’m really excited to create a look with this and see how many looks I can get out of it. During the spring/summer months I love wearing dresses and rompers because I don’t like wearing pants. It is so freeing not wearing any pants. During the winter I become a person with so many layers because IT IS BRICK outside. So I’ve decided to challenge myself on wearing dresses in the winter.. stay tuned for the posts where I let you know if I turned purple or blue from it.

Below are the links to all of the items that I purchased. Any one get any major deals or purchase an item that they have been lusting for that went on sale? I’d love to know! Leave your thoughts below in the comments!

Lastly, my most expensive purchase was my new camera! This was a serious splurge and a major investment. It isn’t the first time I have considered buying a DSLR camera, when I was in college I really found a love for photography.. Mostly it would be during family events and I had a lot of fun doing it. My little cousins were my main focus and now their parents have at least 500 photos or more of them because of my constant snapping. Now that I have a very good reason (my blog) it is worth having. If you recall my tip for comparing your items, this can become confusing. And it did. What I thought I was ordering was actually the Canon Rebel t5 and not the Canon Rebel t5i. Ironically I noticed this hiccup 2 days later… when I was writing this post…

Operation Dumbass:

Since I now realized why people go to the STORE to PURCHASE ELECTRONICS, I have learned my lesson. If I would have gone to Best Buy I could have easily avoided this entire debacle… but it wouldn’t be me if there weren’t some type of hilarious stupid moment. In a complete panic I call the store to find out when the sale ends, which was Saturday. I ordered my camera on Thursday night… the camera won’t be delivered until the follow week. CRAP. Calling my friend in a panic I ask if she will come with me to keep me calm as I rush to Best Buy to get the camera I REALLY wanted… they claimed to have 3 available in stores. Well. I get there. And they do not. Son of a biscuit eating bull dog.

THIS. CAN’T. BE. HAPPENING!

I explained my dumbass-ery to the sales associate/really awesome dude and he totally understood my situation. He even checked the storage room to make sure they didn’t have any in stock. And they still didn’t. Instead of letting me leave the store all upset he told me to order it with them and he would wave the shipping for me. AWESOME. But he wasn’t done just yet with the sale.. he made sure it was 1 day shipping. Legend – WAIT FOR IT – DARY. LEGENDARY! THANK YOU BEST BUY FOR HELPING ME WITH MY DUMBASS PURCHASING MISHAP. Working in customer service can be tough, and it is something I completely understand. I knew he was only doing his job by giving me the let down information and I didn’t dare take it out on him, I only inquired if I should purchase it online myself or if it would be easier in store. He assured me that by purchasing it through the store I would get it faster and if I ordered it online I wouldn’t get my beautiful camera until mid-December. Operation Dumbass ended successfully in my book. Lesson for all of you: GO TO THE STORE!
Canon - EOS Rebel T5i DSLR Camera.png

Special thanks to my friend Alison for accompanying me on Operation Dumbass, your calming presence was much needed as was your laughter. Huge thanks to Best Buy, your employees really go above & beyond for their customers… and for laughing with me that tryptophan is dangerous when shopping online. You guys are great!

Boyfriend Style

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

If my personal style hasn’t shown by now then these posts definitely will show you that I’m extremely casual. Minimal effort is required to pull off any of my looks because I like to keep things simple, its easier to get out the door and easier for me to decide what in the world I am wearing first. It is easy for me to come up with an outfit but then I discover another, and another and another and then I can’t figure out what to wear. Its a vicious cycle.

This look would be one of my go-to looks when I’m running out the door to take on the day. Its easy and comfortable.. and a little rock star. Ok, I wish.

SING IT JOAN!

Every girl should have a pair of boyfriend jeans. They are easy to put on and you don’t have to suck your gut in to get into them either (cough – skinny jeans – cough). I paired it with an Urban Outfitters muscle tank because I tend to sweat while running around, I’m not the only one. Admit it. But since its cold out I wore my bomber jacket and added one of my favorite scarves. Yes its skulls.

What I’m wearing today…

Also another little rock star inspiration here… of course I wear red lips because of Gwen Stefani. She’s a total bad ass.
