Recycled Wardrobe: How to restyle without breaking the bank

Often I find myself lusting after an outfit I see on Instagram or in a storefront on a manikin. We all get that FOMO feeling when we realize that we don’t have that exact outfit in our possession – or do we? Our minds are quickly overtaken with the idea that we need to have that outfit, or those shoes or that bag or that jacket… and we are dragged back down to reality when we look at the price tag. Accepting defeat is not part of my personality – I may lay low for a minute, but when I do come back it is always with a plan.

So ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do I have something similar?
  2. Do I know someone who has something similar?
  3. Is this item an investment piece? (SERIOUSLY!)

Keep it Short

Target is my weakness. Who else can agree with the previous sentence? EVERYONE! They have always been my go to for just about everything under the sun, it is often a danger to go to the store without a chaperon. You always walk out with 100 things you didn’t necessarily need but couldn’t walk pass. They have the same effect on you even online. I was looking for another faux fur coat but nothing like I had been seeing all over instagram or on the streets. It was always the same cut, style, and feel. Since I am a giant pain in the ass to myself, I HAD TO FIND SOMETHING DIFFERENT. Target answered my fashion prayers with this coat…

Grey Coat

Working 9-5, M-F in Midtown may seem part dream and part dreadful. I am knee deep in tourist attractions which means nothing but non-New Yorkers surround me. Once in awhile I spot a native New Yorker walking warp speed (like myself) down the street and instantly get fashion inspiration. Granted I have seen plenty of suits, which are all in various shades of blue, but I hardly ever see a fashionista strutting the streets. Recently I rare sighting of a fashionable New Yorker sparked an idea – A STATEMENT COAT.

Made in LA

“I want to live in LA.” This is a statement everyone has said at least one point or another, myself included. I was obsessed with the laid back lifestyle, constant sunshine and beaches. Who wouldn’t want to live there?? Even going into this recent trip I wanted that dream to become a potential reality.
After finally getting a job in the concrete jungle & away from the forgotten borough, I fell back in love with NYC. I decided I wanted both… a bicoastal lifestyle. How am I going to achieve it? I’ll figure it out… I mean even this little blog could potentially get me there. Continue reading “Made in LA”

Trendy Pink Walls

Earlier in the summer I booked my trip to California. Not realizing it was during the time of fashion week in NYC. I knew I needed to stay longer than 4 days as I had previously done. Both times I did every tourist attraction there was possible. I somewhat hated myself for doing so since I live in tourist central… but I couldn’t help myself. This time around I wanted to be one with the west coasters, well sorta. Continue reading “Trendy Pink Walls”

Soho Stars

I am from New York, more specifically from Brooklyn (proud) and currently residing in the forgotten borough (embarrassed). What may surprise you is that although I have done a majority of the tourist attractions throughout all of my life, there are certain parts of New York City that I have yet to fully explore and appreciate. Soho being one of them. When Rowell suggested that we shoot in Soho I was so excited, so many bloggers shoot there and I love the cobble stone streets and graffiti walls. I some what felt like a tourist walking around in awe looking at everything. It really is like a movie set walking around, these are the iconic places that you see so much. Mostly over the gram but you see my point…

After walking around a bit I decided that I must shoot here forever and always. Not only did it make my commute a little lighter being closer to downtown already but I loved walking around the area. The Soho and Noho area is so beautiful. The small streets and shops are so inspiring and I really need to make an effort to explore the area more. With the summer ending and the fall weather in the far distance I can only imagine how perfect it would be to adventure there… while dodging all the tourists of course.

Since I work in the heaviest of tourist areas, dodging tourist isn’t a problem for me any more. Constantly reminding myself that when I am in a rush that the streets are not a hockey rink. Pushing through the crowds as if I am trying to get to the puck along the boards or in the corners isn’t the nicest thing. Now I get why some people say New Yorkers are rude. I digress….

Rowell suggested that I take a few photos pretending to hold the balloons here. As the cheese ball that I am I went for it. He understands my humor in the sense that behind the resting bitch face I am giggling and laughing the whole way through. Let’s talk about this outfit though… it is a fashion blog and not a full time comedy act ya know…

I found this top that I wanted to wear to my trip to California. As much as I wanted to wait to share this look with you all while I was away, I couldn’t hold back any more. I have this terrible habit of holding onto an outfit for the perfect shot or the perfect day. Star print is my favorite, I hope to incorporate more star printed looks into my wardrobe for the fall. I love everything about the stars and planets… scientifically and even horoscopes. If you didn’t know that Mercury was in retrograde now you do..

So wearing white pants is risky for me to begin with. Not only do I take public transportation every day but I often spill things on my shirt and pants… part of any meal that I am eating, ink from my pen, Cheeto dust, you get the point. Prior to leaving for the shoot I got the tiniest crumb of chocolate on my pants. FREAK OUT MOMENT. TIDE TO GO PEN. OH MY GAWD!! I knew it was the end from there… one stain and the others will follow. I still had to take the train down to Soho after work, paying for a cab to sit in traffic near me is just plain stupid. Trains are the way to go. I prayed to the fashion gods to let me get to the location and get some great shots without another disaster stain happening. My prayers were answered.. This look is my absolutely favorite. Black and white is my favorite combination! I am loving these white pants despite the anxiety it gives me to wear them….  changing in the bathroom with these on the other hand….

If Lysol happens to stumble upon this post please know that I would be a great brand partner. Not only do I hate germs but I would be an amazing customer as I would  go through lysol disinfectant sprays and wipes… spraying every object in my path to avoid germs. Changing white pants in a bathroom was my first blogger experience of “the floor is full of germs and you cannot touch it with your bare feet or get your pants on it” game. So many paper towels covering everything and a intense balancing act. I didn’t want to take the outfit off because I did love the way it looked. But I also wanted to utilize my time by getting more than one look.

The lesson here is simple: Look at the stars, look how they shine for you… and everything that you do…. yeah they were all called bathroom germs.

Create & Cultivate: NYC Conference

I found this event when I originally created my twitter, I was looking for other sites to follow & found this cute website where they had a TON of positive and up lifting blogs. This immediately caught my attention, while exploring their site I saw that they had conferences for bloggers… Not only did it include other fashion or lifestyle bloggers but brands and any one interested in this type of field could attend. Luck was on my side when I found out they were preparing an event in NYC! I immediately got my ticket when they went on sale. The main event was going to take place on Saturday, May 6th and there would also be a cocktail hour on Friday, May 5th. I had to attend both since this was in my New York backyard after all.

Friday’s outfit:

When I heard cocktail hour I wasn’t too sure if I originally wanted to go. The following day was going to be a long day and beauty sleep was a priority. Last minute when I saw the space they were going to have it in I decided to go. I wanted my outfit to reflect how beautiful the space was and it was a cocktail hour after all, why not go with a cocktail dress? When I got there I realized how overdressed I was! Standing out from the crowd is what I like to do best any way, so it worked its way out. I met a few other bloggers that night & everyone was super sweet. My goal for the night was to have fun, which I definitely did! Being awkward and shy is also a huge thing for me, I wasn’t able to snag a picture of my full outfit from head to toe but here are 2 awkward photos of my dress 🙂

Satuday’s Outfit:

This outfit was plotted for MONTHS! MONTHS I TELL YOU! Knowing that this was going to be an all day event (8AM to 8PM) comfort was my #1 priority. I found this top on ASOS and fell in love. It was different and incorporated the off the shoulder trend I had been seeing. It was also very ruffly which is crazy in trend as well. If I was going to go over the top for a top, this was it. My accessories were a way for me to bring in some color to my white top… Bauble bar was the way to go. I chose the blue tassel earrings for 2 reasons: 1. it is my favorite color and 2. because the New York Rangers were playing and I was supporting them from Queens with the lack of a TV to watch them (they lost but that’s another story). Adding even more color but still keeping it simple I chose this really awesome colorful bracelet. It was the subtle hint of a confetti of colors that I was looking for. My detail even went to my makeup, inspired by Christen Dominique from Instagram I chose to add some bright purple as my under eye liner.. this also made my hazel eye’s really pop. With a hint of pink lipstick I was ready to go.

I will talk about what I took away from the entire event in another post but I need to take a minute, or a paragraph, to tell you the most amazing part of my experience there. I had the pleasure to meet and listen to Arielle from Somethingnavy. She is one of the first bloggers I began to follow years ago! I never knew much about fashion bloggers nor did I understand how the entire deal worked but I absolutely loved following her instagram. All of her outfits are and continue to be amazing, and even affordable at times – she pairs some high end designers with her looks. Constantly am I looking at her instagram for inspiration, motivation and even just a reminder that she too has some struggles but doesn’t let it stop her. Watching her instastory and even following her on snap chat I was able t see the behind the scenes life she was living. What an inspiration she is to all bloggers around, from the ground up she has built this into a business and to think it all stemmed from her going through a bad break up that she even decided to create the blog in the first place. Being relatable is something she strongly makes sure her readers and followers feel, and as a follower and reader I sense it immediately. Especially when I met her, she gave me a hug and complimented my hair (which was having a total frizz ball moment). She was so humble and so kind and sweet and waited to take pictures and talk to any one that wanted to meet her. If she ever reads this, which I hope she’ll find in her million likes and comments, I just want her to know how inspiring she is. I cannot wait for her clothing line to come out in the fall & I hope that I am able to get it all before it sells out.

Bows got Back

How adorable are these shirts? I found these on ASOS is so many different styles and I had to hold back buying all of them. For the spring I am trying to defer from buying any more black or white items since I already have 100’s of them. The tiger print caught my eye simply because its different. I like different. What’s even more fun about this is the pinstripe detail for the bows. Normally I prefer to have a longer styled shirt since my hips are so much wider and I would prefer to hide them rather than make it the main focus of my outfit. Showing off my “assets” is exactly what this top does. Bringing the attention to the part of my body I don’t mind showing off 😉

Wearing my hair up was rather different for me since I normally look like a child with my hair up. As I’ve aged I’ve appreciated having a young looking face, it completely sucked trying to get into bars when your underaged and even when you were freshly 21 but I am diverting from what my point is here. My point is with this top I’d have to wear my hair up in order to show off the beautiful back detail. This will definitely be an experiment wearing my hair up to show off this outfit but going outside of my comfort zone is how I will discover new things. And I am all about growing and moving forward in life.  What I am working on is the undergarment situation for this top. I went sans bra for this photo shoot and it was strange. Freeing yet strange. Honesty is part of my reviews on items and I am probably being a little too honest for some on here but we all have them. We all have boobs. I kinda want to purchase those sticky bra’s that are all over Instagram. You know the ones that I’m talking about, all those awkward celebrity videos of them pulling a string and having insane cleavage. I wonder how those would be for a shirt like this since wearing a bra is completely out of the question.

The other top I purchased is similar but with one bow and it is a striped all around. Can’t go wrong with a simple striped shirt either. I plan on getting a few more but vertical stripes since they are more slimming. It is also very different from what is typically sold in stores.

An alternate to these shirts if you prefer to not show off your back you can wear a tank top underneath these. This is what I plan on doing for work since I want to get as much use out of these as possible, and I was graced with a casual dress code at my new job. For the tiger top I could wear a grey, navy or even a green tank underneath. And the striped top I would only be able to wear a white or cream tank underneath since it is a white/cream colored top.

Accessorizing this would be easy, you can wear a statement necklace or keep things simple. I wanted to show off the backs of these shirts to you all, so I left the accessories out of this post. But the options are endless, you can wear whatever makes you happy. And being happy is what it is all about.

Jumpsuit times Two

My current age is that of an adult. My actions are not consistent with that statement, firmly standing strong on my Peter Pan never growing up philosophy …. as I continue to do responsible adult behavior so I can be left alone to act like a free little bird. Maybe not so little after all the pizza I consume but you get the picture. First came all of the weddings and now all of the baby carriages…

If you know me long enough you know how important my family and my close friends (who are like family) are to me. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for them, this goes for gifts too. I love shopping for presents and surprises for them… finding that one item that will make them over the moon no matter how big or small. The beginning of March was baby shower madness for me.. I spent all of February plotting what to get. I always try to go off of the registry because sometimes I’m last minute so nothing is left or I find something else that’s sparks an entirely new idea. What I also had to prepare for was my outfit. Instead of getting 2 outfits I decided to wear the same outfit back to back weekends. It’s cost effective and I’d much rather spend my extra money on the gifts to give.

First up was my cousin Katie, she has always been like an older sister to me growing up. We always chat about Game of Thrones and how devastated we are after each episode… or the nightmares we will have. Thanks a bunch Ramsey. I searched on Pinterest for some ideas for a Game of Thrones theme which rolled into witty onesies. Luckily my other cousin has the amazing cricut machine.. it’s the same machine used to make my NYE tee. I supplied the onesies, she printed my ridiculous ideas for me. And 10 onesies later….

The look on her face was priceless… when you hear the “oh my god how cute!” You know you did good! I promised her to use my new camera to take nice photos of her shower and friends for her to keep as well. Knowing I was going to turn this into a blog post we both made sure our outfits were perfect. I also wanted to be comfortable moving around, hence why I went with a jumpsuit. I didn’t have to worry about a dress or skirt coming up as I had to stand at all different angles to get the perfect shot. Luckily we had people to help carry in all of the presents, which was my biggest fear.

The following weekend I had my good friend Regina’s baby shower. This girl is the sweetest person I know and understands my level of weirdness as we always manage to laugh until we cry and eat until we can’t move. Since we went to a Ranger game back in October, and I know her husband is a fan, I went with an entire hockey themed “basket.” As you’ll see below the detail that went into this basket….

But now as to why I wore the same thing twice. As I stated above, I didn’t want to spend money on 2 different outfits. I also didn’t want to get anything that needed to be adjusted. Because it is March and the temperatures in New York cannot seem to make up its mind as to if it wants to be spring or winter. I wasn’t prepared to wear anything light and springy since I am normally freezing half of the time. ASOS has the best jumpsuits and I know my size in them which helps a lot when ordering online. I found this really cute pajama styled jumpsuit in a green velvet. I loved the idea of being comfortable and who doesn’t want to look like they are wearing fancy pajamas?!

The gamble that I took was ordering from their petite line. I’m not super tall but I am not under 5 feet either. When I got the jumpsuit I knew that the arms and legs would be more of a slimmer fit at the end…. just not as snug as I anticipated. I was barely able to move or bend any of my limbs. I was Frankenstein. Literally. In this green velvet jumpsuit. Immediately I hopped on the ASOS website and ordered the regular sized jumpsuit. Ironically it was cheaper than the petite size, and I wasn’t complaining. It did fit me perfectly, still a little snug while sitting down so I suggest sizing up (my size up was unavailable). The buttons were snap buttons which was AMAZING….. when it came to having to use the ladies room. No panicking that you can’t get it open. Disaster avoided.

At my cousins shower I was moving around a lot so I was very comfortable and warm in this jumpsuit. Because the pants were cropped I didn’t have to worry about having this adjusted either. All my shorty’s : I recommend looking for cropped ankle pants or jumpsuits. It’s a lifesaver.

Winter flare

Bell sleeves have become one of my favorite trends this season. I didn’t want to overly invest in them but a few different styled bell sleeves won’t hurt no body. Ironically as I write this post I keep having to correct myself when I write the word “bell sleeve.” My dogs name is Belle so it’s my go to spelling when I think of this trend, believe me google must be thinking I can’t spell for the life of me the amount of times I have written “belle sleeve top.”

During my first snowed in day of this winter I went on a bit of an online shopping spree. Not insane damage as people would think, no I didn’t max out my credit card or dwindle my savings. Self control people! But I did enjoy shopping the sale that ASOS was having. I highly recommend making an account and saving your favorite pieces to your wishlist. This makes the “scrolling through an endless feed of items” less monotonous. Using the filters for finding what you are looking for can cut back your scrolling time. If you’d prefer to gofor the Olympics of scrolling though then keep on going! What I did find was this really pretty bell sleeve top. This is something I knew I would wear and it was on sale. ADD TO CART!

About a week later I finally caved and got these to die for Suede booties. Steve Madden’s Edit is a heavy favorite among many people and a super popular item. I now saw why. I mean it’s gorgeous! Did I mention it comes in leather too?!  I don’t own a fitted high ankle bootie but I longed for them dearly. This was a bit of a splurge but I know I am going to get my money’s worth and more with many seasons of wearing this bootie. If I like it enough I may go back and get the same pair in leather. Stay tuned to see if I do…

There are so many ways you can wear this bootie. Here I’ve styled it with my jeans over the bootie. I’ll get into my frayed bottoms in just a minute but I really LOVED how this looks.  Flared jeans are also a popular trend this season pairing it with higher ankle booties is such a beautiful look! Many of the ends of jeans are raw which is what I’m really loving at the moment. The reason why I haven’t purchased these styled jeans is because I have wider hips. I don’t think this trend would compliment my body type. You can also wear these booties with a dress or skirt, so many outfit options.. it’s worth the investment!

The jean experiment: I have seen this done before by other bloggers and even on YouTube. Playing seamstress isn’t something I like to mess around with. Although I know how to sew and work a sewing machine I do not own one. What did work out in my favor this season is the raw hem lines. My jeans are constantly bunching at the ankles, even with a short inseam! Any “expensive/designer” jeans I own (3 pairs) have been to the seamstress to fix the length. These are something I would never mess around with. But my jeans that didn’t cost me a pretty penny (or a discounted price from Century) are in for a rude awakening. Since many of them are stretchy material it isn not worth going to have these hemmed. They have a shelf life and it is not long. X amount of washes before it’s time for new ones. So I finally got sick and tired of my jeans bunching and not achieving the look I have inside my coconut (fun word I like to used for my head). The scissors were out, my jeans were cuffed about an inch and a half… damn that’s a decent amount of stretchy jean material. First snip, YIKES! Ok I can do this.. I will cut in a straight line like an arrow. Phew! They fit! VICTORY!!! I pulled some of the frays out on the bottom to create the raw hem line look. And I gotta say it’s not that bad. I did this to 2 pairs of my jeans so far. Slowly I’ll make my way through half of my collection.

Eventually I’ll slowly invest in nicer jeans, but until then this little trick will do 😉
