Recycled Wardrobe: How to restyle without breaking the bank

Often I find myself lusting after an outfit I see on Instagram or in a storefront on a manikin. We all get that FOMO feeling when we realize that we don’t have that exact outfit in our possession – or do we? Our minds are quickly overtaken with the idea that we need to have that outfit, or those shoes or that bag or that jacket… and we are dragged back down to reality when we look at the price tag. Accepting defeat is not part of my personality – I may lay low for a minute, but when I do come back it is always with a plan.

So ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do I have something similar?
  2. Do I know someone who has something similar?
  3. Is this item an investment piece? (SERIOUSLY!)

Keep it Short

Target is my weakness. Who else can agree with the previous sentence? EVERYONE! They have always been my go to for just about everything under the sun, it is often a danger to go to the store without a chaperon. You always walk out with 100 things you didn’t necessarily need but couldn’t walk pass. They have the same effect on you even online. I was looking for another faux fur coat but nothing like I had been seeing all over instagram or on the streets. It was always the same cut, style, and feel. Since I am a giant pain in the ass to myself, I HAD TO FIND SOMETHING DIFFERENT. Target answered my fashion prayers with this coat…

Grey Coat

Working 9-5, M-F in Midtown may seem part dream and part dreadful. I am knee deep in tourist attractions which means nothing but non-New Yorkers surround me. Once in awhile I spot a native New Yorker walking warp speed (like myself) down the street and instantly get fashion inspiration. Granted I have seen plenty of suits, which are all in various shades of blue, but I hardly ever see a fashionista strutting the streets. Recently I rare sighting of a fashionable New Yorker sparked an idea – A STATEMENT COAT.

Made in LA

“I want to live in LA.” This is a statement everyone has said at least one point or another, myself included. I was obsessed with the laid back lifestyle, constant sunshine and beaches. Who wouldn’t want to live there?? Even going into this recent trip I wanted that dream to become a potential reality.
After finally getting a job in the concrete jungle & away from the forgotten borough, I fell back in love with NYC. I decided I wanted both… a bicoastal lifestyle. How am I going to achieve it? I’ll figure it out… I mean even this little blog could potentially get me there. Read More

Trendy Pink Walls

Earlier in the summer I booked my trip to California. Not realizing it was during the time of fashion week in NYC. I knew I needed to stay longer than 4 days as I had previously done. Both times I did every tourist attraction there was possible. I somewhat hated myself for doing so since I live in tourist central… but I couldn’t help myself. This time around I wanted to be one with the west coasters, well sorta. Read More

Soho Stars

I am from New York, more specifically from Brooklyn (proud) and currently residing in the forgotten borough (embarrassed). What may surprise you is that although I have done a majority of the tourist attractions throughout all of my life, there are certain parts of New York City that I have yet to fully explore and appreciate. Soho being one of them. When Rowell suggested that we shoot in Soho I was so excited, so many bloggers shoot there and I love the cobble stone streets and graffiti walls. I some what felt like a tourist walking around in awe looking at everything. It really is like a movie set walking around, these are the iconic places that you see so much. Mostly over the gram but you see my point…

After walking around a bit I decided that I must shoot here forever and always. Not only did it make my commute a little lighter being closer to downtown already but I loved walking around the area. The Soho and Noho area is so beautiful. The small streets and shops are so inspiring and I really need to make an effort to explore the area more. With the summer ending and the fall weather in the far distance I can only imagine how perfect it would be to adventure there… while dodging all the tourists of course.

Since I work in the heaviest of tourist areas, dodging tourist isn’t a problem for me any more. Constantly reminding myself that when I am in a rush that the streets are not a hockey rink. Pushing through the crowds as if I am trying to get to the puck along the boards or in the corners isn’t the nicest thing. Now I get why some people say New Yorkers are rude. I digress….

Rowell suggested that I take a few photos pretending to hold the balloons here. As the cheese ball that I am I went for it. He understands my humor in the sense that behind the resting bitch face I am giggling and laughing the whole way through. Let’s talk about this outfit though… it is a fashion blog and not a full time comedy act ya know…

I found this top that I wanted to wear to my trip to California. As much as I wanted to wait to share this look with you all while I was away, I couldn’t hold back any more. I have this terrible habit of holding onto an outfit for the perfect shot or the perfect day. Star print is my favorite, I hope to incorporate more star printed looks into my wardrobe for the fall. I love everything about the stars and planets… scientifically and even horoscopes. If you didn’t know that Mercury was in retrograde now you do..

So wearing white pants is risky for me to begin with. Not only do I take public transportation every day but I often spill things on my shirt and pants… part of any meal that I am eating, ink from my pen, Cheeto dust, you get the point. Prior to leaving for the shoot I got the tiniest crumb of chocolate on my pants. FREAK OUT MOMENT. TIDE TO GO PEN. OH MY GAWD!! I knew it was the end from there… one stain and the others will follow. I still had to take the train down to Soho after work, paying for a cab to sit in traffic near me is just plain stupid. Trains are the way to go. I prayed to the fashion gods to let me get to the location and get some great shots without another disaster stain happening. My prayers were answered.. This look is my absolutely favorite. Black and white is my favorite combination! I am loving these white pants despite the anxiety it gives me to wear them….  changing in the bathroom with these on the other hand….

If Lysol happens to stumble upon this post please know that I would be a great brand partner. Not only do I hate germs but I would be an amazing customer as I would  go through lysol disinfectant sprays and wipes… spraying every object in my path to avoid germs. Changing white pants in a bathroom was my first blogger experience of “the floor is full of germs and you cannot touch it with your bare feet or get your pants on it” game. So many paper towels covering everything and a intense balancing act. I didn’t want to take the outfit off because I did love the way it looked. But I also wanted to utilize my time by getting more than one look.

The lesson here is simple: Look at the stars, look how they shine for you… and everything that you do…. yeah they were all called bathroom germs.

Create & Cultivate: NYC Conference

I found this event when I originally created my twitter, I was looking for other sites to follow & found this cute website where they had a TON of positive and up lifting blogs. This immediately caught my attention, while exploring their site I saw that they had conferences for bloggers… Not only did it include other fashion or lifestyle bloggers but brands and any one interested in this type of field could attend. Luck was on my side when I found out they were preparing an event in NYC! I immediately got my ticket when they went on sale. The main event was going to take place on Saturday, May 6th and there would also be a cocktail hour on Friday, May 5th. I had to attend both since this was in my New York backyard after all.

Friday’s outfit:

When I heard cocktail hour I wasn’t too sure if I originally wanted to go. The following day was going to be a long day and beauty sleep was a priority. Last minute when I saw the space they were going to have it in I decided to go. I wanted my outfit to reflect how beautiful the space was and it was a cocktail hour after all, why not go with a cocktail dress? When I got there I realized how overdressed I was! Standing out from the crowd is what I like to do best any way, so it worked its way out. I met a few other bloggers that night & everyone was super sweet. My goal for the night was to have fun, which I definitely did! Being awkward and shy is also a huge thing for me, I wasn’t able to snag a picture of my full outfit from head to toe but here are 2 awkward photos of my dress 🙂

Satuday’s Outfit:

This outfit was plotted for MONTHS! MONTHS I TELL YOU! Knowing that this was going to be an all day event (8AM to 8PM) comfort was my #1 priority. I found this top on ASOS and fell in love. It was different and incorporated the off the shoulder trend I had been seeing. It was also very ruffly which is crazy in trend as well. If I was going to go over the top for a top, this was it. My accessories were a way for me to bring in some color to my white top… Bauble bar was the way to go. I chose the blue tassel earrings for 2 reasons: 1. it is my favorite color and 2. because the New York Rangers were playing and I was supporting them from Queens with the lack of a TV to watch them (they lost but that’s another story). Adding even more color but still keeping it simple I chose this really awesome colorful bracelet. It was the subtle hint of a confetti of colors that I was looking for. My detail even went to my makeup, inspired by Christen Dominique from Instagram I chose to add some bright purple as my under eye liner.. this also made my hazel eye’s really pop. With a hint of pink lipstick I was ready to go.

I will talk about what I took away from the entire event in another post but I need to take a minute, or a paragraph, to tell you the most amazing part of my experience there. I had the pleasure to meet and listen to Arielle from Somethingnavy. She is one of the first bloggers I began to follow years ago! I never knew much about fashion bloggers nor did I understand how the entire deal worked but I absolutely loved following her instagram. All of her outfits are and continue to be amazing, and even affordable at times – she pairs some high end designers with her looks. Constantly am I looking at her instagram for inspiration, motivation and even just a reminder that she too has some struggles but doesn’t let it stop her. Watching her instastory and even following her on snap chat I was able t see the behind the scenes life she was living. What an inspiration she is to all bloggers around, from the ground up she has built this into a business and to think it all stemmed from her going through a bad break up that she even decided to create the blog in the first place. Being relatable is something she strongly makes sure her readers and followers feel, and as a follower and reader I sense it immediately. Especially when I met her, she gave me a hug and complimented my hair (which was having a total frizz ball moment). She was so humble and so kind and sweet and waited to take pictures and talk to any one that wanted to meet her. If she ever reads this, which I hope she’ll find in her million likes and comments, I just want her to know how inspiring she is. I cannot wait for her clothing line to come out in the fall & I hope that I am able to get it all before it sells out.
