Winter flare

Bell sleeves have become one of my favorite trends this season. I didn’t want to overly invest in them but a few different styled bell sleeves won’t hurt no body. Ironically as I write this post I keep having to correct myself when I write the word “bell sleeve.” My dogs name is Belle so it’s my go to spelling when I think of this trend, believe me google must be thinking I can’t spell for the life of me the amount of times I have written “belle sleeve top.”

During my first snowed in day of this winter I went on a bit of an online shopping spree. Not insane damage as people would think, no I didn’t max out my credit card or dwindle my savings. Self control people! But I did enjoy shopping the sale that ASOS was having. I highly recommend making an account and saving your favorite pieces to your wishlist. This makes the “scrolling through an endless feed of items” less monotonous. Using the filters for finding what you are looking for can cut back your scrolling time. If you’d prefer to gofor the Olympics of scrolling though then keep on going! What I did find was this really pretty bell sleeve top. This is something I knew I would wear and it was on sale. ADD TO CART!

About a week later I finally caved and got these to die for Suede booties. Steve Madden’s Edit is a heavy favorite among many people and a super popular item. I now saw why. I mean it’s gorgeous! Did I mention it comes in leather too?!  I don’t own a fitted high ankle bootie but I longed for them dearly. This was a bit of a splurge but I know I am going to get my money’s worth and more with many seasons of wearing this bootie. If I like it enough I may go back and get the same pair in leather. Stay tuned to see if I do…

There are so many ways you can wear this bootie. Here I’ve styled it with my jeans over the bootie. I’ll get into my frayed bottoms in just a minute but I really LOVED how this looks.  Flared jeans are also a popular trend this season pairing it with higher ankle booties is such a beautiful look! Many of the ends of jeans are raw which is what I’m really loving at the moment. The reason why I haven’t purchased these styled jeans is because I have wider hips. I don’t think this trend would compliment my body type. You can also wear these booties with a dress or skirt, so many outfit options.. it’s worth the investment!

The jean experiment: I have seen this done before by other bloggers and even on YouTube. Playing seamstress isn’t something I like to mess around with. Although I know how to sew and work a sewing machine I do not own one. What did work out in my favor this season is the raw hem lines. My jeans are constantly bunching at the ankles, even with a short inseam! Any “expensive/designer” jeans I own (3 pairs) have been to the seamstress to fix the length. These are something I would never mess around with. But my jeans that didn’t cost me a pretty penny (or a discounted price from Century) are in for a rude awakening. Since many of them are stretchy material it isn not worth going to have these hemmed. They have a shelf life and it is not long. X amount of washes before it’s time for new ones. So I finally got sick and tired of my jeans bunching and not achieving the look I have inside my coconut (fun word I like to used for my head). The scissors were out, my jeans were cuffed about an inch and a half… damn that’s a decent amount of stretchy jean material. First snip, YIKES! Ok I can do this.. I will cut in a straight line like an arrow. Phew! They fit! VICTORY!!! I pulled some of the frays out on the bottom to create the raw hem line look. And I gotta say it’s not that bad. I did this to 2 pairs of my jeans so far. Slowly I’ll make my way through half of my collection.

Eventually I’ll slowly invest in nicer jeans, but until then this little trick will do 😉

Rebecca Minkoff Booties

Warning! Warning! This is a splurge alert!

In my spare time I like to browse items online that I cannot afford. It passes the dull time in between moments at work when it is incredibly slow, sitting in a waiting room, avoiding doing any adult task necessary or my absolutely favorite being anti-social. Rebecca Minkoff is a designer that I have grown to love over the years. It started out with a bag how did it end up like this? It was only a bag! After what seemed like a century of being un-employed all I wanted to do was buy myself something nice. Six long months of applying job after job became depressing, especially since the market was so horrible, atrocious, nightmarish. Once I finally started working again I knew for Christmas I wanted to get myself something nice. Being frugal for so long can take its toll on you, especially when you never know when that period will ever end. I spotted this classic bag of hers and I have been wearing it ever since I got it. (It’s one of the only bags I wear on my blog) Eventually I became more comfortable with having such a nice bag that I didn’t mind putting it through a little tough love. Enter the search for a new bag. I did buy a very nice every day bag of hers as well which I have previously shown here on the blog. This time around I wanted to venture away from the bags. She clearly had so much more to offer. The clothes, the shoes, the technology friendly items! And not to mention her store is beyond tech savy!

I had spotted these shoes, well rain boots,  around fashion week and was considering this to be another Christmas splurge. A pattern clearly repeating itself. I had only seen these shoes online and never on a person before. It was a little risky ordering shoes that I hadn’t seen on a foot. Were they going to look nice? Am I even going to like how they look on me? My prayers had been answered. My cousin’s friend happened to be wearing them on a rainy day, they were rain boots after all. Right then and there I knew I HAD TO HAVE THEM! She spoke so highly of them and I really loved the way that they looked. Not your typical rain boot where it comes up to the knee, but a bootie which I could even wear on a night out. Perfection!

My mother convinced me not to buy them because she was determined to find them on sale and get them for Christmas as a gift. I felt bad making her spend that excessive money on me, I am old enough now where I can afford to buy my own gifts. But once that woman is on a mission, there is no chance in her turning back. And she did it with success. Not only did she get them on sale (she will not share her story) but she surprised me with them. I had put them in the back of my head and forgot about them during the holidays. I was too busy worrying over what to get everyone else, my mother included.

The first snowfall, well the sprinkling that we got, I knew I HAD TO WEAR THESE. And they are amazing. I love the way they look and how they feel. I don’t feel like I am wearing a rain bootie when walking around in them. Even when playing with my dog. She insisted on being part of this photo shoot.

Winter Coat

In a post not too long ago, I showed everyone my winter coat. My favorite peacoat of all time. After posting those photos I realized how worn down that coat had been. I tried to recall when I had even purchased that coat, and it was a blur. High school, college? Somewhere in between? I have no idea. The amount of times I had sewn those buttons back on was a task I started to do almost every winter. And this year I was not up to that task. Luckily I have another winter coat that was holding me over in the mean time, but I was terribly sad that my peacoat was seeing its last life. The amount of memories I had wearing that coat in the winter were endless. Walking around my college campus with the collar popped up so high that you couldn’t see my face, nor did I want any one to see me. Strutting into the bars and stumbling out of them. Walking into offices for a cold marketing call trying to hid my fear and pounding heart behind this fabulous coat. My grandfather pinning his Firefighter badge as a gift to me. Finding my coat on the floor at the Garden after jumping out of my seat 10 times during a period of hockey. The list goes on.

After Christmas I had enough. Every single blogger that I follow was posting these posts of gorgeous peacoats. A majority out of my price range. I didn’t want to give up just yet. I hadn’t forgotten about my secret Pintrest board for my wish lists. And there it was. A few options of coats I had picked out. The shopping gods were with me that day because this coat was on sale, and in limited stock of my color and size. A whopping $200 savings!

It was my final 2016 awesome sale. And it was GLORIOUS. I absolutely LOVE this coat. The zippered pockets are perfect for my clumsy self. I never have to worry about my phone falling out of my pocket or my mittens or my chapstick. Heaven forbid we lost the chapstick in the winter! The gold buttons were definitely a change up from my silver ones, but this military styled jacket is something I really liked. The military trend among winter coats this seasons is a trend I’ve taken notice to. Since I am so short I prefer a mid-length coat, long enough to cover my apple bottom but short enough where I am not tripping over my coat. Yes, I am that clumsy. My other winter coat is a long bubble coat to my knees, again not too long where I could trip over myself but long enough to keep my legs warm. The only complaint I have is the waist isn’t as cinched as I am used to. My old coat had the tie around the waist where I could pull it in very tight so you can see my body shape. Yes, I know this coat doesn’t have that. If it was a smaller size it might not have fit me properly. Can’t have it all when it comes to certain things, and it is a battle I was willing to let go to have a nice warm coat this winter.

Jeans & Fishnets

Before Kim Kardashian disappeared from social media, she hinted at this trend ever so briefly. I was slightly unsure about this trend to be honest here. Wearing such heavily destroyed jeans that looked like denim chaps weren’t a trend I really wanted to participate in. Nor would it be something that I would wear. Destroyed denim is my thing. I like paying for destroyed items, my father cannot seem to wrap his head around it. Some days I am convinced he purposely repeats this conversation to simply annoy me. But I digress. Before I really decide to commit to a trend I like to see how other girls are styling it. Instagram and Pintrest inspiration is a must. I hadn’t really seen any one wearing this out in public, and I was frankly afraid at the look I was going to give or even the remark. “Hi, umm you fishnets are showing… no the umm.. the top of the fishnets, you know where the control top would be.”  Yeah that sort of awkward conversation.

Kim Kardashian’s fishnet & jeans (source: instagram)

So I waited, and I waited. Of course some of the first ones I had seen were. Not good. The trend was immediately dismissed. But then, I saw a change. Not everyone was doing the same thing. Many of my jeans are ripped at the knee, and I started to see some girls wearing that. An extra layer in the winter isn’t so bad.. so I continued to look. Fishnets were EVERYWHERE. My teenage angst self was beyond excited to see this. It was nearly a part of my every day wardrobe back in the day. So I was looking forward to trying out this trend to see if I liked it. Now I hate explaining myself but I am going to do this any way. When I decided to jump into this trend I dove into this head first. I wasn’t going to ease my way into it. No. I was going to honor Kim by trying a very similar style, but with my own flair of course. I found these jeans on sale from ASOS in petite. Yes! A jean that will fit my short self! What worried me was the rise. Low rise. A girl with wide hips isn’t friendly when it came to this type of jean. But they were $24 and ASOS is great with returns, so why the hell not. After trying these jeans on I will definitely say that plumbers crack is a risk you are going to take wearing them. If you plan on standing the entire time then go for it. Since these jeans are so damn low, I went for that Kim K look. Pulling my fishnets above my low rise jeans and up to my waist. Yikes, this was so strange. Insanely strange. But I kinda liked it. The inner seams of the jeans were zippered at the bottom which gave it a different look. Of course I paired this with my high top converse sneakers and band baseball tee (which I knotted for a more fitted look) . If I am going to honor my style, I am going to do it dammit!

As I’ve mentioned I like to search for inspiration from Pinterest. Below are some of the pictures I drew inspiration from. The fun part of this trend is that I can wear these with multiple styled jeans… you can wear this with knee ripped jeans, boyfriend jeans, extremely destroyed denim, cropped ankle jeans, whatever your hearts desire. Mixing up the color of fishnets or even the print can be a lot of fun too.. this is a trend you can experiment with and definitely have a lot of fun with. A little bit of advice, always take a picture of your outfit before leaving the house. You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I have even said “YIKES GIRL! Change your outfit” to myself.

Game Of Thrones Look: Winter is Here

Since I first started this blog I have been planning this look. I knew exactly how I wanted it to look, so my search began. After the killer season finale we all found out that winter was here to stay… as it has become in New York. Despite the very random spring feeling days, winter has made sure we haven’t forgotten about him just yet. The temperatures have dropped so staying warm is important, so why not be fashionable about it? Here in New York, fashion girls know how to style their outerwear. From many different styles of coats in a ton of a different colors, or your basic black, camel, navy, white, grey coats. Having options is key, and it is something I have definitely learned over the years. This “coat” which is really cape is a different take on the winter outerwear trend. Capes are something I would recommend wearing if you are quickly going from indoors to outdoors and you aren’t traveling super far. It is a really cute quick overcoat for your outfit and to be honest it was the longest cape I could find with a faux fur collar that didn’t break the bank.

The past two weekends it snowed here on Saturday in New York, last weekend being the absolute worst! Being cooped up at home was not something I had been looking forward too after a very long and draining week at work. Earlier in the day I decided to shop a little online, and ASOS was having a sale! A recipe for potential budget disaster, I managed to only purchase things I truly wanted at the moment. Of course there is always that one buyers regret, and it is sold out now too! I couldn’t stand it any longer, I had to get out of the house! Many years ago I decided to get a truck for one of these instances, besides the fact I still had to get to work in any weather. The snow was light and fluffy so it wasn’t too difficult to clean off my truck, and thanks to my handy dandy extended snow brush I was able to accomplish that. Luckily I managed to stay safe on the roads and reach my friends house to spend a fun Saturday night screaming at the television while the New York Rangers played.

Sometimes the winter can get boring because not many people want to go outside. It is freezing after all, and the Starks have been warning us for almost 6 years now that winter is coming.

I get it Ned. Winter is here. Ironically I am wearing my faux fur blanket as a cloak as I type this post. Another part of this outfit that I absolutely loved is my new over the knee boots. I am a very loyal shopper to Steve Madden, a majority of my shoes are from there. Whether it is just the style they make I always find myself looking at their shoes. Even on other websites without realizing that I am clicking on a Steve Madden product. Sueded is my absolute favorite for fall/winter boots and booties. Personally, I just like the way they look better. Leather and faux leather have always given me a problem. I have a wider calf and there are very limited options out there. Ah hem, all shoe designers I’m looking at you. I understand that it is difficult and you can get them stretched out. Which I have, and even the shoe maker told me that if I were to stretch them any further it would damage the boot. After attempts of doing work outs to try to make my calves a tad bit smaller, I gave up. This is my body and these are my calves. END OF STORY. I went back to my love of suede, it is a little more stretchy and forgiving. Plus it looks so much nicer compared to a leather boot. You don’t see all of the wrinkles in the leather unless it is a wrinkled leather boot (which I have owned before). The downfall of these boots is I need to be weary about wearing them in the snow and slush and rain. But there is always another pair of boots that I can wear 😉

However, putting this look together I began to find the positive things about winter. The more fun moments about winter that I used to love as a child. Playing in the snow, avoiding the ice, the fun of it all. Could I wear this look in the snow? Absolutely not. Maybe if I had a longer cape… and by that I mean a cloak.. and a direwolf. My labradoodle isn’t that intimidating.

Beanie Town

My winter hat collection began many years ago after a New York Ranger victory and I insisted that since they had won I was going to purchase myself a hat. See below the very old throw back when Instagram first came out… Yikes.

img_1704

At the time I had minimal Ranger gear. You’d be shocked at the amount I have accumulated since then. My collection had grown over the years, hats included. This hat that I am wearing has a memory attached to it too. In 2014, the NHL announced there would be Stadium Series in the winter. Sort’ve similar to the winter classic by playing at a baseball stadium but it consisted of 4 games for the entire series. This included my favorite team playing against BOTH of my favorite rivals, the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders. It was a dream to attend one of these games, I loved the idea of seeing my favorite hockey team playing at my favorite baseball teams stadium. The ultimate New York team love affair. Scoring last minute tickets I had to run out and get this hat.. knowing they would be selling it for double the price at the stadium. And I haven’t stopped wearing it since.. ironically these type of hats are in trend. I’ve been rocking it since 2014 because I enjoy being obnoxious.

Let’s jump into these beanie trends, there are honestly a few different versions of the pom pom happening. The classic pom pom which is what I am wearing with my Ranger Hat and the fur pom pom which is also what I have shown.. Here are some more beanie options that are trending. Which one is your favorite?

  1. Double Faux Fur Pom Pom Beanie
  2. Top Shop Black Tonal Pom Beanie
  3. H&M Grey Pompom Hat
  4. H&M Patchwork Beanie
  5. Super Dry North Cable Bobble Hat *note this is the one I am wearing in the above picture
  6. SuperDry Color Block Beanie
  7. Kate Spade Cat Faux Fur Pom Pom Beanie
  8. Roxy Beanie
  9. Nike Beanie
  10. Cozy Ribbed Knit Beanie
  11. Adidas Originals Cuff Beanie
  12. New York Rangers Black and Grey Pompom Beanie
  13. New York Rangers Pom Pom Beanie
  14. New York Rangers Royal Face-off Beanie

Hoodies

If I could wear a hoodie every single day without it being strange then I absolutely would. Even as I type this post I am wearing a hoodie. Not sure how to explain how this all started but I guess this really goes back to high school. Hoodie weather seemed to last forever, and it was easier to wear than a coat. GAP hoodies were also extremely popular the time, along with north face zip up fleece jackets. Talk about a trip down memory lane. I always gravitated towards a hoodie, I was prepared for both colder weather and the rain… which is always seemed to do both. Umbrellas never helped because the wind always went against you and to be frank they are annoying to use. My love of hoodies grew over the years. I always got a hoodie when I would go to a concert, at one point my hoodie collection was so large that I had no place to put them any more. I was forced to go through so many years of memories and I really just wanted to move forward from that point in my life.. so I stupidly gave them all away, not saying that it is a bad thing to donate your clothes at all.. but since they were so nostalgic I could’ve turned it into a huge blanket. Coulda, shoulda, woulda as they say…

So my newer hoodie collection began. I am the type of person who is cold all the damn time. No matter how thick my sweater is or how many layers of shirts I have on, I am just always cold. Hoodies were a way for me to stay warm so they quickly became part of my every day wardrobe. The downside is that hoodies aren’t always acceptable to wear. As I got older I found myself only wearing them to the gym or for errands and always in the house. To this day I still wear my sorority sweatshirt daily. Of course my hoodies range from sports (New York Rangers/New York Yankees) to Nike to H&M to a few band hoodies I’ve collected again. What I am wearing today is one of my favorite finds from Nike.

I actually discovered this style of hoodie when I was visiting California for the first time. When you think of California you think warm weather all the time right? So with that in mind what I had come to discover is that it gets freezing cold at night. According to my best friend it is because of the mountains near by which is why there is a cold front. I probably jumbled that fact horribly, but the fact is that it does indeed get cold at night in California. We happened to be shopping at the Grove so I ran into the Nike store to purchase a hoodie. I found this cowl neck styled hoodie which I LOVED. Nor did I have this type in my collection, I went with grey rather than the typical black and I was nice and toasty for the rest of the night. I always had meant to go back to get the same one in black because you can’t have enough black clothing options in your closet now can you. For Christmas my wish was granted!

What I also loved was that hoodies are an actual trend this season! Thank you athleisure for multiple reasons. There are a variety of types of hoodies that you can wear, for comfort to style and both. The biggest trend that I have been seeing is the oversized sweatshirts with the over the knee boots, this is called lampshading. The Kardashians were all over this trend last year.. Kourtney & Kim have done this trend. Kim more recently wore this oversized hoodie with sliders.. in the past she also sported this really fun cropped hoodie with large bell sleeves. I absolutely LOVED this look on her. Here is a similar cheaper option from Tobi.

Where did they get the inspiration from? The runways of course. In the fall/winter runways hoodies were seen on a variety of different runways. See more below (source Vogue):

Here are some hoodie options I’ve found to incorporate into your wardrobe. Remember, it is how it is styled that will make or break the look. Pairing a hoodie with ripped jeans and some heels can quickly change your look.
